A Message from NDPA CEO: Celebrating National Water Safety Month

Dear Supporters and Friends,

May marks National Water Safety Month, a time when we at the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA) renew our commitment to our mission of preventing drowning and water-related injuries. This month, we reflect on the critical importance of water safety and education and honor the efforts of our community, whose unwavering dedication helps save lives. Tragically, the need for our work has never been more urgent. Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlight a staggering increase in drowning rates that underscores the severity of this issue. In 2022, drowning incidents among children aged 1-4 rose by 28% compared to 2019. Simiarly, the Black community saw a 28% increase in drowning rates in 2021 compared to 2019, and there was a 19% increase among older adults aged 65-74 in 2022 compared to 2019. These number are not just statistics; they represent families forever changes by loss.

In response to these challenges, the NDPA is proud to launch its #FirstSport campaign, emphasizing the significance of learning to swim and advocating for comprehensive safety measures. The campaign highlights the “5 Layers of Protection“. Each layers is a critical component in our strategy to reduce drowning risks and ensure that water activities remain joyful and safe for everyone. Our efforts to educate and advocate are only possible because of the collective strength of our alliance. Our members, volunteers, donors, and sponsors play a critical role in every initiative, from local swim lessons to national safety campaigns. Your support enables us to reach communities across the nation, spreading knowledge and skills that can prevent tragedy.

This month, as we gather whether virtually or in person to share resources and strategies, let us also share stories of hope and resilience. Let us celebrate the lives saved through our collective efforts and the positive impact of our work. While the challenges are significant, our resolve to combat drowning grows stronger with each life we touch. Looking ahead, the NDPA is committed to expanding its outreach and enhancing its programs. We are exploring new partnerships, developing innovative educational materials, and increasing our presence in communities where drowning rates are highest. We believe that everyone has the right to enjoy water safely, and we are dedicated to making that a reality.

As we observe National Water Safety Month, I invite each of your to engage with our mission. Participate in our events, share the #FirstSport campaign and our other messages, utilize our Water Safety Season Toolkit, and consider how you can make a difference. Whether by donating, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, your involvement is crucial to our success.

Together, we are a powerful force for change. Together, we can prevent drowning and save lives. Thank you for standing with us. Here’s to a safe and successful National Water Safety Month and Water Safety Season.
