Elizabeth “Tizzy” Bennett, MPH, MCHES led drowning prevention initiatives for 30 years while serving as community health director at Seattle Children’s. Since 2020 she has co-chaired the Life Jacket Working Group for the U.S. National Water Safety Action Plan and is also a Clinical Instructor in the University of Washington School of Public Health. Tizzy has co-authored over 30 journal articles and book chapters on drowning prevention and water safety primarily focused on open water including observing life jacket use; the evaluation of the Stay on Top of It campaign to increase life jacket use as well as a Vietnamese water safety campaign; the effectiveness of designated swim areas; and Everyone Swims, a policy and systems change approach to increase access to swimming. She has worked and presented internationally including co-leading the development of open water drowning prevention guidelines and co-editing the Prevention Section of Drowning: Prevention, Rescue and Treatment.
