Historic Highs In Childhood Drowning Make Water Safety A Greater Priority Than Ever This Summer

(Tustin, CA – April 27, 2023) – With childhood drowning on the rise and children at a higher risk of drowning during the summer months as they spend more time near pools, lakes and oceans, the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA), has kicked off its #WaterSafetyChampion campaign for Summer 2023 to spread the word to parents, caregivers, and communities that avoiding a drowning tragedy lies in applying the Five Layers of Protection, which includes multiple, evidence-based prevention strategies.

Throughout his decades of work in St. Paul as a lifeguard, instructor and coach — leading, innovating, recruiting and yes, saving lives — his goal has been to stay out of the news.

“We want to avoid that relevance, and you know what avoids that relevance — doing the boring work,” he said. “What’s exciting is when the lifeguard went in and saved the kid. No, I want the lifeguard not having to go in because they did such good work preventing that from happening and training so many people that all the kids that come to the pool know to swim, they wear life vests, so the lifeguard is sitting bored to death because everyone is safe in the water.”

On February 13, 2023 the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NDPA.org) will kick off its 2023 National Water Safety Conference. Presented in conjunction with the AOAP (Association of Aquatic Professionals) Annual Conference at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the annual event is for all advocates of childhood drowning prevention – from parents and pediatricians to pool industry pros and product safety experts.

Drowning Facts – Have We Hit a Crisis Point in America?

The issue of drowning prevention and mitigating pool-related fatalities go hand-in-hand. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) annual drowning report, fatal child drownings and nonfatal drowning injuries in children under the age of 15 remain high and nonfatal drownings spiked by 17% in 2021.
